I visited Cardiff castle of a weekend away earlier this year and I was so amazed at how such historic beauty was nestled within a busy modern high street that I had to draw it!

Cardiff Castle was built in the late 11th century and still stands proudly upon the mound it was built on.

My approach to the drawing was to show its dominance in position and highlight the grounds to which surround the castle too.

I wanted to create the castle with a high amount of detail whilst including the gatehouse in the background. I didn't want the background to clash so it is just lightly penciled in. The horizon of bare branch trees add a perfect backdrop to this historic scene.
